A knurled grab bar has a diamond textured pattern cut into the surface of the metal, which provides additional surface grip. Knurled grab bars are especially helpful if the grab bar is going to be installed in an area that may be wet or if the user’s hands may be wet, such as a shower or bathtub.
Similar to peened grab bars, knurled grab bars are also known as non-slip grab bars, anti-slip grab bars, safety grab bars, and slip resistant grab bars.
Knurled grab bars are similar to peened grab bars by the fact that both surfaces have a textured finish. However, the knurled surface has much deeper diamond pattern cross cut into the metal surface, which feels a bit more rough and textured as compared to the sand blasted and more lighter textured grip of a peened grab bar.
Knurled grip grab bars are ADA compliant. The textured finish does not affect ADA compliancy. However, some local ADA laws may actually require textured grip surfaces in public commercial bathrooms. Knurled grab bars are primarily installed in residential bathrooms and rarely found in commercial bathrooms. When a textured surface is specified in a commercial bathroom, it will more than likely be a peened grab bar that is used.
Grab bar surfaces that have additional texture are preferred in shower and bathtub applications whereby the grab bars are grabbed with a wet hand. People tend to prefer grabbing a textured bar surface over a smooth bar surface as it provides a feeling of increased grip.
During the grab bar fabrication process, the knurling process cosists of cutting a diamond shaped crosshatch onto the surface of the stainless steel tubing. This cross cutting significantly enhances the gripping surface of the grab bar by increasing friction and reducing slippage.
