What is the Standard Height for Bathroom Safety Grab Bars?
The standard height for bathroom safety grab bars, as outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines, falls within a range of 33 to 36 inches measured from the finished floor.
Commercial and public restrooms are required by law to abide by ADA regulations in regard to the number of safety grab bars present, their specific placements and their size.
Residential bathrooms are not required to follow ADA regulations; however, it is still important to note that the standard height for bathroom safety grab bars is 33 to 36 inches above the finished floor.
Other than height, what are the other ADA regulations for bathroom safety grab bars?

- The rear wall horizontal grab bar is required to be mounted 33-36 inches above the finished floor behind the toilet. This grab bar must extend at least 12 inches from the centerline of the water closet toward the side wall and at least 24 inches from the centerline of the water closet toward the open side.
- The side wall horizontal grab bar is required to be spaced a maximum of 12 inches from the back wall and extending a minimum of 54 inches from the back wall at a height of 33-36 inches.
Shower Grab Bars:
- The control wall horizontal grab bar is required to span the full depth of the control wall. The center of the flange to the adjacent wall must measure less than 6 inches. This grab bar must be placed at the same height as the back wall grab bar, ranging between 33 to 36 inches above the shower floor.
- The back wall horizontal grab bar must extend to within 6 inches from the adjacent walls. With a shower seat present, the grab bar length should be adjusted as not to hang over the shower seat. This grab bar shall be placed at the same height as the control wall grab bar, ranging between 33 to 36 inches above the shower floor.
Bathtub Grab Bars:
- The foot wall horizontal grab bar is required to be placed 33 to 36 inches above the bathroom floor.
- The back wall horizontal grab bars are required to be located 12 inches maximum from the foot of the tub and 24 inches maximum from the head of the tub.
- One grab bar on the back wall must be located 9 inches above the rim of the tub.
- The other grab bar must be 33 to 36 inches above the bathroom floor.
- The head wall horizontal grab bar is required to be placed 33 to 36 inches above the bathroom floor.
- The foot wall horizontal grab bar must also be 33 to 36 inches above the bathroom floor.
*It’s important to keep in mind that the ADA requires horizontal grab bars, but not vertical grab bars. Vertical grab bars may be required in your bathroom depending on local ANSI building codes. Some architects/designers will specify the vertical grab bar on their drawings just to ensure that they do not receive a comment from the city or because they are unsure of local building code and include it just to cover themselves. Also, this vertical bar is very helpful for people with disabilities and it is not an expensive addition to the overall budget of the project. If you are unclear if your local building code requires the side wall vertical grab bar, go ahead and install it just to be safe!
