How Many Grab Bars Do I Need in My Shower?

Typically, you will need at least 3 grab bars in your shower. The number of grab bars you need to install varies depending on the type of shower it is and if it’s a residential or a commercial shower. 

For residential bathrooms and showers, the amount of grab bars you install and where you install them is completely up to you based on your personal preference. 

For commercial bathrooms and showers, you are required by law to abide by ADA regulations which specify a certain amount of grab bars and particular placements in the shower.

How many grab bars should I install in my residential shower?

For basic slip prevention in a shower, at a minimum, we recommend 2 grab bars in the following shower wall locations:

1. Entry Wall Grab Bar
2. Side Wall Grab Bar

For advanced slip prevention in a shower, we recommend 4 shower grab bars in the following shower wall locations:

1. Entry Wall Grab Bar
2. Side Wall Grab Bar
3. Front Wall Grab Bar
4. Back Wall Grab Bar

How many grab bars do I need to install in a commercial shower?

ADA law requires shower grab bars to be placed in specific shower locations dependent upon the following types of showers:

• Transfer Showers (36″ x 36″) – 3 required grab bars
• Standard Roll-In Showers (30″ x 60″) – 3 required grab bars
• Standard Roll-In Showers (30″ x 60″) without a shower seat – 4 required grab bars
• Alternate Roll-In Showers (36″ x 60″) – 3 required grab bars
