Are Polished Grab Bars Slippery?

Yes, polished grab bars can be slippery, especially in wet environments (such as showers) and if your hands are wet or soapy. Polished surfaces offer less traction than textured ones or even brushed surfaces, which offer a minimal amount of texture.

What’s the difference between smooth vs. textured grab bars?

  • Smooth grab bars: While polished grab bars may look nicer than some other grab bar finishes, their mirror-like, smooth finish does not offer much grip. The same goes for other smooth grab bars finishes; however, brushed grab bars offer a slightly textured surface created by the brushing finishing process.

  • Textured grab bars: Textured grab bar surfaces offer a much better grip, especially in a wet bathroom or shower environment. The most common textured grab bar surfaces include Peened and Knurled. GrabBars.com offers Polished Peened and Polished Knurled grab bars for extra slip prevention while maintaining the high-end look of the polished finish.

Should I install grab bars with a polished finish or a textured finish in my bathroom and shower?

  • If you are concerned about slipping, choose a grab bar with a textured surface. Take a look here: Peened Grab Bars and Knurled Grab Bars
  • Even if you choose a smooth, polished grab bar, make sure to install it in the ADA recommended locations as these strategic placements are in areas where slips & falls are most likely to happen. Take a look at these guidelines here: Grab Bar Placement Guidelines
  • You can also consider applying grip pads to a polished grab bar to improve slip resistance. These are readily available at most hardware stores and can be applied to the grab bar to improve slip resistance.
  • No matter which type of grab bar you choose, it is important to make sure that it is installed properly according to manufacturer’s specifications so that it provides the utmost safety to users. Is there a way to make my polished grab bars less slippery?

There are two main approaches to make your polished grab bars less slippery:

  1. Increase the grip of the grab bar itself:
    • Apply grip tape: This is the easiest and most affordable solution. Find tape specifically designed for grab bars at hardware stores or online. Make sure the tape is comfortable to hold and dries quickly to prevent mold growth.
    • Consider a spray-on coating: There are some spray-on products available that claim to increase the slip resistance of smooth surfaces. However, these solutions may not be long-lasting and might require reapplication according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Research and choose a reputable brand before applying any coatings.
  2. Improve your grip when using the grab bar:
    • Install grab bars strategically: If possible, relocate the grab bars to areas outside the direct flow of the shower where they are less likely to be wet and soapy.
    • Use bath mats: Having a bath mat outside the shower will help to dry your feet before stepping onto a potentially slippery surface.

Important considerations:

  • Whichever method you choose, make sure the solution is durable and appropriate for a bathroom environment, meaning it should resist mold and mildew growth.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying any grip tape or coatings to your grab bars.

Remember, the best solution depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you are concerned about the effectiveness of any of these options, it’s always best to consult with a professional for advice and it is highly recommended to install a textured grab bar, such as Peened or Knurled, if you are concerned about slipping in the shower or bathroom.
