What are the Placement Guidelines for ADA Bathroom Grab Bars?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has specific guidelines for grab bar placement in bathrooms to ensure accessibility. These guidelines include placement around toilets, in showers and in bathtubs and are applicable for any handicap-accessible commercial bathroom. It’s important to note that the ADA guidelines are not mandatory for private residences. However, following these guidelines can still be a good idea to ensure safety and accessibility in your own bathroom, especially if you or someone you live with has mobility limitations.

Understanding ADA grab bar installation guidelines is critical for being issued a Certificate of Occupancy (CO). A new building cannot be legally occupied until a CO has been issued, and incorrect installation of grab bars can result in inspection failures and delayed openings. Don’t let this happen to you!

What are the ADA toilet grab bar placement guidelines?

1. One rear wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
2. One side wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)

What are the ADA shower grab bar placement guidelines?

ADA law requires shower grab bars to be placed in specific shower locations dependent upon the four following types of showers:

Transfer Showers (36″ x 36″)

1. One control wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
2. One control wall vertical grab bar (Contingent upon local building code)
3. One back wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
4. One shower seat wall horizontal grab bar (Optional; not required if there is an ADA shower seat present)

Standard Roll-In Showers (30″ x 60″)

1. One control wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
2. One control wall vertical grab bar (Contingent upon local building code)
3. One back wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
4. One shower seat wall horizontal grab bar (Optional; not required if there is an ADA shower seat present)

Standard Roll-In Showers (30″ x 60″) without shower seat

1. One control wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
2. One control wall vertical grab bar (Contingent upon local building code)
3. One back wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
4. One shower seat wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory when there is no shower seat present)

Alternate Roll-In Showers (36″ x 60″)

1. One control wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
2. One control wall vertical grab bar (Contingent upon local building code)
3. One back wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
4. One shower seat wall horizontal grab bar (Optional; not required if there is an ADA shower seat present)

The ADA has two distinct grab bar placement requirements contingent upon the location of the bath seat in the shower:

Bath With Seat in Tub

1. One foot wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
2. Two back wall horizontal grab bars (Mandatory)
3. One head wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
4. One foot wall vertical grab bar (Contingent upon local building code)

Bath With Seat at Head of Tub

1. One foot wall horizontal grab bar (Mandatory)
2. Two back wall horizontal grab bars (Mandatory)
3. One foot wall vertical grab bar (Contingent upon local building code)
