Where Should ADA Grab Bars Be Installed?

ADA guidelines specify precise locations for grab bar installation in commercial/public restrooms to ensure maximum accessibility and safety. Grab bars are required by ADA law in commercial bathrooms to ensure accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. It’s important to note that if you are installing grab bars in a residential bathroom, their placement is completely up to the user based on personal preference.

What are the required placements for ADA grab bars in commercial bathrooms?

Near the toilet:

  • Rear wall: 1 horizontal grab bar is required, minimum 36 inches long, mounted 33-36 inches above the floor.
  • Side wall: 1 horizontal grab bar is required, minimum 42 inches long, spaced a maximum of 12 inches from the back wall and extending at least 54 inches from the back wall.

In the shower:

  • The specific grab bars and their required placements will vary depending on the shower size and configuration; however, all types of showers will at least require the following grab bars:
  • Control wall: 1 horizontal grab bar is required, minimum 24 inches long, mounted 33-36 inches above the floor.
  • Back wall: 1 horizontal grab bar is required, minimum 18 inches long, mounted 33-36 inches above the floor.

In the bathtub:

  • The specific grab bars and their required placements will vary depending on whether or not a shower seat is present; however, all types of bathtubs will at least require the following grab bars:
  • Foot wall: 1 horizontal grab bar is required, minimum 24 inches long, mounted 33-36 inches above the floor.
  • Back wall: 2 horizontal grab bars are required, minimum 24 inches long, one should be mounted 9 inches above the rim of the bathtub and the other should be mounted 33-36 inches above the floor.

By providing specific guidelines for placement and dimensions, ADA regulations help to:
